This seminar is a creative writing class in English for women, led by writer and editor Jessica Kasmer-Jacobs. Each session will explore themes such as passion, grit, hardship, mental health, motherhood, sex, joy, and heartbreak. We will read short excerpts by a range of celebrated female writers who have explored these topics with insight and depth — figures like Joan Didion, Shirley Jackson, Rachel Cusk, Nora Ephron, Elisa Albert, and more.
A special emphasis will be placed on contemporary Israeli women writers whose work has been translated into English, including Shelly Oria, Maya Kessler, Masha Glozman, Ruth Margalit, Hila Blum, and Tehila Hakimi.
Classes will blend spirited discussion with collaborative feedback. Each week participants will receive a writing prompt inspired by that session׳s reading, and will have the opportunity to share their work in a supportive workshop setting. Every participant will receive personalized feedback from the instructor, as well as from fellow writers.
This class is for beginners who don׳t know where to start, or seasoned writers looking for a bit of inspiration and kinship with other literary spirits.
Jessica Kasmer-Jacobs is a writer and editor based in Tel Aviv. She was previously a literary agent and an editor at The Wall Street Journal Book Review. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, and The Boston Globe.
סדנת כתיבה באנגלית בהנחיית כותבת ועורכת ג׳סיקה קסמר־ג׳ייקובס. בכל מפגש נעסוק בתמות ספרותיות עמוקות ומורכבות, כגון תשוקה, עוצמה, אתגר, בריאות נפשית, אמהוּת, מיניות, שמחה ושברון לב. נקרא קטעים קצרים של סופרות בולטות שהתמודדו עם נושאים אלה בחדות ובכנות — ביניהן ג׳ואן דידיון, שירלי ג׳קסון, רייצ׳ל קאסק, נורה אפרון, אליסה אלברט ואחרות.
דגש מיוחד יינתן לסופרות ישראליות עכשוויות שעבודותיהן תורגמו לאנגלית, בהן: שלי אוריה, מאיה קסלר, מאשה צור גלוזמן, רות מרגלית, הילה בלום ותהילה חכימי.
המפגשים ישלבו דיון ער ומשוב קבוצתי. בכל שבוע תינתן משימת כתיבה בהשראת הטקסטים שקראנו. כל משתתפת תוזמן לשתף את יצירתה במסגרת תומכת ומעודדת, ולקבל משוב אישי מהמרצה ומחברות הקבוצה האחרות.
